Featuring: Bernhard Gueller, conductor
Andrea Ludwig, mezzo-soprano
Bruckner: Three Pieces for Orchestra
Peter Lieberson: Neruda Songs
Schumann: Symphony no. 3 “The Rhenish”
One of the 20th century’s most spiritual and inventive American composers, the late Peter Lieberson spent several years in Nova Scotia as a director at Halifax’s Shambhala Centre. Now, Symphony Nova Scotia honours Lieberson’s memory with its first-ever performance of his Neruda Songs, “some of the most sublimely beautiful pieces to be written in recent years” (BBC Magazine). The orchestra also plays Schumann’s last symphony, the enigmatic and emotional “Rhenish,” in its first performance here since 1992.
During his time in Nova Scotia, Peter Lieberson guest-conducted Symphony Nova Scotia and even wrote a piece especially for the orchestra.
This concert will be recorded by CBC.
