East Meets West
Thursday, February 9, 2012, 7:30 pm
Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, Halifax
Featuring: Ed Hanley, tabla
Bernhard Gueller, conductor
On the program:
Manuel de Falla: Suite no. 1 from The Three-Cornered Hat
Dinuk Wijeratne: Tabla Concerto
Schumann: Symphony no. 4
East meets west as Symphony Nova Scotia performs the world premiere of a brand-new work by Dinuk Wijeratne – the first full orchestral concerto ever written for the tabla, the king of Indian percussion instruments.
“It’s a cultural clash between a western orchestra and an eastern solo instrument,” says Maestro Gueller.
In contrast, the orchestra also performs Spanish composer Manuel de Falla’s jaunty Three-Cornered Hat, alongside Robert Schumann’s classic Fourth Symphony.
Season tickets for this concert are available now! Single tickets go on sale August 2, 2011.
